Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use a tanning lotion?

Yes! Tanning lotion accelerates and enhances the tanning process by moisturizing the skin, also allowing for a longer lasting tan. Some tanning lotions have additional color enhancers, a.k.a "bronzers", which can be cosmetic or derived from nature, such as nut oils. At 24hr Tan Alpharetta, we do a "skin type interview" with each customer to ensure we pick the right lotion for their tanning needs. We ask about their tanning history, if they have used lotion before, what they like and didn't like about that product. We also ask about any allergies or skin sensitivity, preference to fragrance and texture, and what their overall objective is to achieve their perfect tan. Our staff tests every lotion we sell in order to help our clients find the right skincare product, not just for fun :)

Why do I need to wear eye protection?

Closing your eyelids is not adequate protection; your eyelids are too thin to block ultraviolet light.   Over a long period of time, tanning without wearing eye protection can cause cataracts, macular degeneration, and conjunctivitis. For this reason you must wear eye protection when tanning at our salons.

How often do I need to tan?

The number of times you tan to build a base or to maintain your color depends on how well you tan, what type of equipment you use when tanning, and what type of lotion you use when tanning. The average person needs to tan about 3-4 times per week to build a base, and then 1-2 times per week in order to maintain their color after developing their base tan. Remember, tanning is a process and will be different for everyone depending on their skin type. Ask our staff for a suggestion if you have reached this point in tanning.

How can I get darker if I have reached the "tanning plateau"?

First, you should be using a tanning lotion when tanning. And once you feel you have reached a "plateau" you can either switch from an accelerator to a bronzing lotion,  or bronzing to tingle products. Try a different level of bed as well to increase the tanning results. This means from regular to high-pressure models or between lay down and stand up models that will give you different levels of UVA and UVB exposure. Ask our staff which beds and lotions which take you to the next level.

Why Custom Airbrush and how does it work?

Our technicians have been professionally trained to help you achieve the perfect tan. The custom solution has two components. A cosmetic bronzer that gives you instant color in less than 15 minutes and then Dihydroxyacetone, a.k.a. DHA, which reacts with the surface of your skin to turn it that beautiful bronze color. DHA is derived naturally from raw sugar so it is completely safe and non-toxic. The DHA develops within 4 to 6 hours and continue to deepen over the next 8-10 hours. Once developed, your tan looks completely natural and can last up to 1 week.
